Biospheres “Microgravity” is a truly unique album, giving new life to what might normally be considered ambient. Biosphere albums are an all you can eat salad bar of styles ranging from ambient, minimal, idm, electronica, and sometimes you’ll even come across a track that feeds you a little of ebm style synth work. Microgravity is Geir Jenssen’s debut album under the name Biosphere, and is nothing short of amazing.
Now the problem with this album is that it’s virtually impossible to compare to anything the average person might have heard. But if I was forced to compare it to something, it would be Aphex Twins “Selected Ambient Works 85-92″ (Not Selected Ambient Works vol 2!). The only reason it’s comparable to SAW 85-92 is because it goes back and forth between beats and ambiance, while still remaining dark and minimal. While not quite as accurate a comparison, Sator Absentia has a similar style of ambient, idm, and minimal beats.
In conclusion, everyone should own this album. If your the type of person who only likes the look into newly released music, ignore the original 1992 release date and just pay attention to the 2001 re-release and pick this album up.
